For this outstanding project we had to design something to replicate a heart valve and its function. This was a challenge for us as we had to be as cost effective as possible. We went through many models and prototypes before we settled on using San Marin's very own 3D printers to make something. As we came to this decision we had to keep in mind to use something with elasticity so we could test the young modulus of whatever our final product was. With this in mind we put spaces on our 3D printed model for rubber bands to be put in that way we could test the modulus and at the same time keep back flow from coming into our "heart". In the picture below you are able to see the model me and my group were able to build. The most basic way I can describe our model to work is that we would get a water bottle and squeeze water into the little black tube that you see below. Once this water is in the tube in won't leak out of it as there is the top which holds it all in the tube. Whenever you want to release the water out you would pull the top off that is connected to rubber bands and then the water would all leak out. Our final product was a great success and we were able to find out that the young's modulus of it was . Pictures of our 3D printed model are below

Before this project I had no clue what young's modulus was but now I'm well aware that it is used to measure the elasticity of an object. Learning about gave me and my group an easy equation to figure out elasticity which we will need to use on our capstone project. I've been very fortunate throughout these past couple years because with almost all the projects we have done I've learned new concepts. This project was no different than the last ones as I was able to learn new concepts while enjoying this project that was thrown at me.
