Reflection
This lab was very fun and I cant wait to get some more results. We did many important and cool things with this lab. First we put plants through many steps with first picking them from the grounds. Our group collected the California butter cup and clovers for our experiment. We first ground down these plants and filtered them into tubes. We then weighed them then put them through many steps of mashing the plants with water to make a paste. After we got this paste we put it through a funnel and then put the thinnest solution in a micro-centrifuge tubes. We then poured agar plates while discs were soaked in our water and alcohol extracts and then placed on our plates. The plates sat over night in an incubator till the next day when we examined them for dead bacteria. When we read our results we noticed clearings around all our extracts and mold growth in our water extracts. Both the positive and negative controls that we placed in the plates had .2mm of clearing. This information tells us that our plants have antimicrobial activity that is water soluble. We expected the positive clearing because ampicilian is antibacterial. Although our experiment worked there is room for human error in pouring the plates which we experienced with the first plates we poured and they began to grow mold. this type of experiment is important to biotech because it allows scientists to find new plants that they can use in medicines. this allows different strains of disease to be cured by different plants and organisms. biodiversity is important to biotech because it allows scientists to use different plants and organisms to cure disease that aren't cured by and plant or organism.
